On May 13, 2002, 28 universities and universities of applied sciences in the federal states of Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse and Lower Saxony founded the "European Institute for Quality Assurance (EIQA)". Meanwhile, EIQA is counting more than 40 higher education institutions as well as 2 associations and societies among its members.
It is the prime objective of EIQA to ensure quality assurance in teaching and learning at higher education institutions and to promote the international recognition of tertiary education standards. To this aim, EIQA cooperates with the Central Accreditation and Evaluation Agency Hanover (ZEvA), whose central task is the accreditation of study programs and degrees.
Higher education institutions which are members are entitled to a more cost-efficient handling of their accreditation procedures at ZEvA as well as preferential treatment.
Membership of EIQA is open to higher education institutions, academic professional associations, research societies and accreditation associations for higher education.
